Letter: Police and fire were very helpful

Posted

To the editor:

On Nov. 14, 2022, a group of older residents participated in a Coffee and Conversations session with local police and fire officials at the Peck Center for Adult Enrichment. Questions and contact were strongly encouraged, “You will never bother us. If you are concerned, call the police.” Police Chief Michael Correia and Fire Captain Scott Carroll were friendly and informative. They were invited by the Senior Services Advisory Board. Here are their wise words of advice:

• Financial exploitation is a top concern. Beware of scams, use Caller ID- if you do not recognize a caller, let it go to voicemail. Grandparent scams are prevalent, do not provide information or send money. Call the police to notify. If someone offers a cash prize, do not let them in your house or provide information. If a scam is not recognized at first, do not be embarrassed. Notify the police with any suspicion.

• Trust your instincts when someone new contacts you to provide a service. Reputable companies provide ID and have permits. Volunteers should be part of a familiar organization.

• The Town of Barrington has a dialer program for emergencies. A landline phone is needed for connection, there is a suggested donation for set-up only and no ongoing costs. When activated, Rescue services are dispatched to the home.

• If you are concerned about a neighbor or friend, the best phone number for wellness checks is 437-3930.

Rescue professionals are appreciative of the pink refrigerator card, kept up to date. These are available at the Peck Center or police or fire department.

• Be sure smoke and CO2 detectors are operating properly, these devices expire over time, and there is often funding available to help with costs. Call with any questions.

• Consider purchasing a key lockbox and providing the combination to police and fire.

• House numbers should be well-lit and clearly visible—avoid cursive written numbers.

• Prevent falls: railings and grab bars are very important, especially on stairs. Beware of clutter.

• Doorbell cameras are very helpful and body cameras are coming for Barrington Police.

• A future Coffee and Conversation session devoted to cybersecurity is being planned. Education about what to look out for can prevent serious problems of identity theft.

Members of the Senior Advisory Board express their sincere gratitude to Barrington Police and Fire for this valuable presentation and advice. Participants expressed their appreciation for the excellent information and professionalism provided. Barrington residents are in good hands!

“Coffee and Conversations” with Bryan Hoffman, FSCP and Amy Stratton, Esq. will provide valuable information for seniors, “Getting Your Planning Paperwork Organized.” This opportunity to learn from their financial planning and legal expertise will be held on Monday, Feb. 27 at 10:30 a.m. at the Peck Center for Adult Enrichment. Call the Peck Center at 247-1926 x 201 to register.

Sincerely,

Members of the Senior Services Advisory Board
