The Barrington High School football team scored 35 points in the first half and powered to a 42-8 victory over Shea on Friday night, Sept. 15.

The Eagles exploded for 21 points over a span of one minute and five seconds late in the second quarter to build a commanding 35-0 halftime advantage.

With 3:23 left to play in the first half, Spencer Proulx caught a pass from Alex McClelland and sprinted into the end, increasing Barrington’s lead to 21-0.

On the ensuing Shea drive, the Raiders attempted a screen pass but Eagles’ safety Chucky Potter jumped in front of the Shea receiver and intercepted the ball. Potter followed a wall of blockers into the end zone. The scoring play was called back on an illegal block, but Barrington was not to be stopped, as Potter took a handoff from McClelland and followed blockers around the left side of the line for a touchdown. That score came with 3:01 left to play in the half.

Barrington’s defense recovered a Shea fumble on the Raiders’ next offensive play, and with 2:28 left in the half the Eagles’ Mitchell Ivatts turned that turnover into six points on a nice run around the left side of the line.

Ben Aree kicked his fifth extra point of the first half and the Eagles’ lead expanded to 35-0. Charly Potter scored Barrington’s second-half touchdown, capping a nice drive where he carried a handful of Shea defenders on his back for extra yards.

Barrington opened the scoring in the first quarter with a touchdown pass from McClelland to AJ DiOrio, and the Eagles went up 14-0 after DiOrio blocked a Shea punt and two plays later ran the ball into the end zone.

Barrington’s defense held Shea to 29 yards of total offense. In fact, the Eagles’ first team defense held the Raiders to -42 yards. Shea ran 24 plays — Barrington stopped 11 for negative yards. The Eagles defense also had two interceptions (Potter and Troy Van Ness) and recovered one fumble.

On offense, Barrington’s DiOrio scored two touchdowns and made four tackles for a loss from his spot at linebacker.

McClelland completed six of eight passes for 117 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Evan Anderson had a key reception in the second quarter, and Ivatts made a diving catch on a long pass from McClelland in the first quarter, but the play was called back for holding.

The 2-0 Eagles will host 2-0 Westerly on Friday night, Sept. 22. The game kicks off at 6:15 p.m.
