Eagles fall to Quakers in girls basketball finals, 48-32

Barrington falls behind early, unable to close the gap

The Barrington High School girls basketball team managed one field goal in the first half of the State Tournament Championship game and lost to Moses Brown 48-32.

The sluggish start spoiled the Eagles’ chances for double-championship season; Barrington entered the State Tournament as winners of the Division I title. But against the Division II Quakers, the Eagles struggled.

Janaya Prince Baquero knocked down a three-pointer at the start of the second quarter, while Maddie Gill and Riley Graveline each hit two free throws. Those seven points accounted for all the scoring for Barrington in the first half of the State Tournament finals — the Eagles trailed 26-7 at the break.

Meanwhile, Moses Brown’s Lauren Bousquet single-handedly outscored the Eagles in the first half. The sophomore scored 17 points in the first two quarters and finished the game with 29.

The Eagles trailed by 27 points with about two minutes left to play in the third quarter, 36-9. In the last 10 minutes of play, Barrington outscored Moses Brown 23-8. Graveline sparked the run with six points to close out the third quarter. In the fourth, Prince Baquero opened the Eagles’ scoring with a driving layup. With five minutes left to play, Isys Dunphy knocked down a three-pointer, and Prince-Baquero followed that with a three-pointer of her own. Dunphy’s steal and score cut the Quakers lead to 42-26 with less than four minutes to play.

Gill drilled a long three-pointer at the 2:49 mark and cut the Quakers’ advantage to 13 points, at 42-29. Moses Brown’s Hannah West got fouled and hit both free throws to push the lead to 15. Prince Baquero hit another three pointer with 2:01 to play, but that 12-point deficit, 44-32, was as close as Barrington got.

Following the game, Bousquet was named MVP for Moses Brown while Gill earned MVP honors for Barrington.
