The Barrington High School boys tennis team is 2-1 after the first three matches of the season.

After defeating South Kingstown 7-0 in the season-opener, Barrington battled back and forth against LaSalle in an away contest.

Barrington won two doubles matches — Bryce Kupperman and Gabe Anderson won at second doubles and Dawen Cheng and Zachary Spear won at third doubles.

The Eagles’ number one singles player, sophomore Luke Sapolsky, came up just short in his match, losing 7-5, 7-5. At third singles, Barrington’s Jeremy Kuo lost a tough, three-set match. Kuo held a lead in the third set before losing 7-5.

Barrington Coach Story Salit said his team believes it has the ability to challenge LaSalle this season.

“We talked about it at practice… LaSalle has been dominating the league the last couple of years, but we don’t have a fear factor going into the matches with them,” Salit said.

“Most people wouldn’t want to see LaSalle twice, but we’re glad we get to see them again later in the season.”

Barrington recently knocked off Moses Brown, 6-1, to push its record to 2-1.

Other starters for the Barrington boys tennis team are Charlie Martin at second singles and Vineet Abbineni at fourth singles. Salit recently shifted the doubles teams. At number one doubles is Kupperman and Anderson; at number two doubles is Cheng and Henry Birbiglia; and at number three doubles is Speak and Garrett Meehan.

Other key contributors are Chris Johnson, Justin Kuo, Chris Clyne and Jason Lu.

Salit, who is entering his second season as head coach, said he is excited for the team’s prospects this year.

“It’s been great. I’m lucky. We have a great group of kids,” he said.

The Eagles will play Hendricken on Wednesday and host Smithfield on Thursday.
