The BHS math team has done it again.

Earlier this month, Barrington High School outscored teams from across Rhode Island and captured the math state championship.

It was Barrington’s 21st math state title in the last 24 years.

The BHS team of Yiming Xiong, Vignesh Peddi, Zachary Weinstein, Noah Higbie, Athena Gao, and Iris Yang scored 24 points more than any other team at the state championship — Barrington finished with 155 points, while Wheeler was second at 131 points, and East Greenwich was third with 101 points. Cranston East finished in fourth place with 96 points and Hendricken, which hosted the competition, finished fifth with 91 points. (The top 10 teams from the regular season qualify to compete at the state meet.)

Four BHS students received trophies for placing in the top-10 in the state this year. Barrington High School freshman Iris Yang had the best score for any student in the state with 69 points. Yiming Xiong placed third with 66 points, Vignesh Peddi finished fourth with 65 points, and Noah Higbie finished eighth with 61 points.

Barrington High School math team coach Bob Marley this year’s team included 34 students.

“In addition to the A team members, a number of students deserve special recognition for making valuable contributions and showing dedication to the team,” Marley wrote in an email to the Barrington Times.

These students include:

• Seniors: Yike Chen, Dawen Cheng, Paul Dulchinos, Aidan Hurlock, Kamran Pahlavi, Bence Lukacsy

• Juniors: Connor Marley, Maddox Godwin, Vineet Abbineni, Michelle Xian, SangMin Park, Luke Andsager, Felix Zeller, Suleimen Seitkarim

• Sophomores: Emma Pautz, Troy Tian, Levon He, Alan Weng

• Freshmen: Siddharth Gupta, Andre Gil, Nate Coutant, Justin Kuo

• Eighth-grader: Sophia Gao

Barrington High School will travel to Shrewsbury High School in Shrewsbury, Mass. on Friday, April 28 to represent Rhode Island at the New England Math Competition.

Regular season

More than 30 high schools in Rhode Island participated in the Rhode Island Math League this year.

And when the dust settled from the regular season, Barrington finished with three of the top four teams in the state. Barrington’s A team finished with 337 points, and was tied by Wheeler. In third place was Barrington’s B team, and in fourth place was Barrington’s D team. Barrington’s C team finished in eighth place overall this season.
