Bayside Family YMCA swim coach Jennifer Baker has been named National Swimming Coach of the Year by YMCA USA.

Each year YMCA USA recognizes a dedicated swim coach who promotes achievement, encourages positive and supportive relationships, and inspires a sense of belonging among swimmers. Baker, who has coached swimming for more than a decade and has led the Bayside YMCA Stingrays to eight consecutive league championships, earned the award this year.

“I was shocked and honored to receive this award,” Baker said. “I truly could not have accomplished this without all the other coaches, especially, my husband, Ray. We have a great team and community at the Bayside YMCA, and that’s what makes my job as coach so rewarding. 

“I also want to thank Laurie Pansa, Bayside YMCA’s Aquatics Director. Without her support, our team would not be what it is today.”

Pansa said Baker is very deserving of the award.

“Jen is the embodiment of strength and courage,” Pansa said. “She consistently brings a sense of humor and profound positive influence to all those around her.”

Bayside Family YMCA officials said Baker has been a longtime advocate for all swimmers of all abilities from all backgrounds. Her much-loved buddy system pairs experienced swimmers with incoming swimmers to foster community and connectivity. Many swimmers have graduated from the team to swim competitively at the collegiate level.

Andrea Falaguerra, a YMCA Swim Official and Bayside Stingray swim parent, said Baker’s program attracts swimmers from all across Barrington and beyond.

“She takes the time to connect with each and every swimmer and parent,” Falaguerra said. “Parents of new swimmers watch her calm our beginners, and our experienced athletes witness her bring out the best in our swimmers. Jen creates an atmosphere of kindness within the team, to our competitor teams and in our community.”

Bayside YMCA Stingray Coach and swim parent Albert Garcia agreed.

“Over the years, I have admired Jen’s skill as a coach and parent. She exemplifies a balance of love, caring, discipline, support, and steadfast commitment to her community,” Garcia said. “Together, with her husband Ray, they have successfully coached thousands of kids to not only be faster swimmers, but better people.”
