Volunteers turn out for annual Day of Caring

Another year. Another Day of Caring.

Barrington celebrated its fifth annual Day of Caring earlier this month, as dozens of volunteers stepped up to help their neighbors with all sorts of projects.

In the past, volunteers have raked leaves for residents who were unable to do so, repaired broken steps, cleaned out gutters and completed other work. With the help of grants from the Spencer Trust, Thrivent Financial, and other sponsors, the Barrington Day or Caring has been able to serve more than 25 local projects and complete more than 100 individual projects.

The Town of Barrington, and several houses of worship (Barrington Congregational Church, St. James Lutheran Church, St. John's Episcopal Church, Temple Habonim, and Barrington Presbyterian Church) assisted with the event. Additional groups that also helped out included The BAY Team - Barrington Prevention Coalition and Bayside Family YMCA.

The Day of Caring is held each year, typically on the second Monday of October.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
