Barrington High School junior Alex McClelland was named MVP of the Cam Newton 7-on-7 football tournament in Washington, D.C. last weekend.
McClelland plays quarterback and led his team, Breakthrough Elite, to a 6-0 record in the tournament. The team featured players from a number of Rhode Island high schools, including Central, Mt. Pleasant, North Kingstown, Woonsocket, LaSalle, Barrington and St. Raphaels.
McClelland finished the tournament completing 77 percent of his passes (36 of 47), with 12 touchdowns and no interceptions. In the six, 20-minute games, he passed for 480 yards and accounted for 58 percent of his team’s scoring.
The tournament featured teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Florida, Connecticut, Virginia, North Carolina and Rhode Island.
In the championship game, McClelland went 7-for-10 for 120 yards and three touchdowns. McClelland plays quarterback for the BHS varsity football team in the fall.
