The Barrington High School chess team finished first in the Ocean State Scholastic High School Chess League this season.

Barrington finished with 9.5 match points and a total of 37.5 game points. The place Barrington ahead of second place Wheeler School (8 match points, 29 game points), and third place Classical High School A (7.5 match points, 26.5 game points). Other teams to finish in the top-11 were LaSalle Academy (fourth), Classical B Team (fifth), Lincoln High School (sixth), Central Falls (seventh), St. Raphael’s (eighth), Bishop Hendricken (ninth), Homeschool (10th), and Portsmouth Abbey (11th).

Barrington High School chess team coach Stephen Marshall said the number one board for BHS has a rating of 2,100, while board two is 1,800, board three os 1,700 and board four is 1,300.

“There are more students involved. We have a ‘Chess Club’ here at the high school, where any students can come, play chess and hang out. It's around 20 people,” Marshall wrote in an email to the Barrington Times. “The team is just a section of the club, where we have our best players who want to compete.

“For this season, there was a clear enough difference between our players so we didn't have to do tryouts and we still had the team from the previous year. In 2025, we will most likely need to do tryouts since we have a few members graduating. This will decide who is board one, etc.”

This is the second year competing for the BHS chess team. Coach Marshall said there may have been a chess team at the school years ago.

Members of this year’s Barrington High School chess team are Connor Marley, Andrew Li, Robert Li, Levon He and Sid Gupta.
