A number of Barrington fencers from the Rhode Island Fencing Academy & Club managed to squeeze in a major fencing competition just before Christmas.
The tournament—a regional junior/cadet circuit event—was hosted by Boston Fencing Club in Brighton, Mass.
Barrington fencers accumulated half of the total medals awarded to RIFAC club members:
• Anika Breker topped the podium with a first place gold in junior women’s foil.
• Brian McDermott won two third place medals in both cadet and junior men’s epee.
• Anna Saal grabbed a sixth place finish and an eighth place finish in cadet and junior women’s epee, respectively.
• Dasha Smuk won a sixth place medal in junior women’s epee.
Fencers participated in events by age group: the junior category for athletes aged 20 years old and under; the cadet category for athletes aged 16 years old and under.
Medalists in each age group earned points towards qualifying for the February Junior Olympic Fencing Championships and the July National Championships, both major competitions.
