Barrington won 3-1 against Middletown on Saturday, July 8.

The win propels Barrington into an elimination bracket final against Portsmouth — the showdown is scheduled for Wednesday, July 12, at Sherman Field in Portsmouth at 5:45 p.m.

In the game against Middletown, Barrington’s Thomas Lawson hit a two-out single in the top of the third inning and scored when Caldarella roped a double. Middletown tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning. The first two Middletown batters struck out, but the next hitter walked, followed by a single and another walk. With the bases loaded, Middletown’s Jameson Freitas hit a single through the right side of the infield, scoring a run.

A second Middletown runner rounded third and headed for home. Meanwhile, Barrington’s Jackson Gill charged the ball and fired a strike toward home plate. Barrington catcher Fluet caught the ball and slapped the tag on the runner. The umpire took a prolonged look at the baseball snow-coning out of Fluet’s mitt to make sure he held on, and then called the runner out.

Game changing play,” said Barrington Coach Collins.

Barrington took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Seamus Reynolds and Harrison Collins started the inning with back-to-back singles. The runners advanced to third and second on a passed ball, and an errant throw from the Middletown catcher allowed Reynolds to score and Collins to advance to third. Two batters later, a grounder by Gill allowed Collins to score and gave Barrington the 3-1 advantage.

Caldarella pitched five innings for Barrington and struck out 11 Middletown batters. Lawson pitched the sixth. Middletown managed to load the bases, but could not plate any runs. Lawson tallied three strikeouts.
