Local high school students score well in recent tournament

Nearly 200 debate team members from nine area high schools participated in the Jan. 21 tournament at Mt. Hope High School. 

Barrington students won three of the five top awards for novice individual speaker: Sam Turner (1), Juncheng Quan (2) and Madhri Yehiya (3). Barrington also won two of the five highest awards for novice teams: Sam Turner and Kevin Zhu (1), and Nina Polumbo and Abigail Gaetz (5).

Four of the five top awards for individual varsity speaker went to Barrington students Ian Mellen (1), Emly Sancomb (2), Eli Shea (3) and Henry Johnson (5). Barrington also won four of the top five awards for varsity teams: Eli Shea and Jack Troiano (1), Kate Turner and Mikaela Boone (2), Emily Sancomb and Lexi Anderson (4), and Jared Jageler and Maya Striuli (5).

Many other Barrington students also placed (scored in the top 25 percent of all debaters) in the tournament.

• Varsity teams: Amanda Woodard and Katie Hoag; Henry Johnson and Jack Killilea; Chrsitian Odjakjian and Ian Mellen; and Emilio Cuebas and Taryn de Meillon

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
