The Barrington High School football team defeated South Kingstown 41-7 in a battle of undefeated Division II football teams.

The Eagles traveled to South Kingstown on Friday night, Oct. 6, and after a quiet start, Barrington exploded for a 27-0 first half lead.

Barrington opened the scoring when quarterback Alex McClelland sprinted six yards into the end zone. Ben Aree kicked the extra point and the Eagles led 7-0.

Barrington’s defense forced a punt on the next drive, and Matt Zimmerman blocked the kick. AJ DiOrio recovered the ball in the end zone and after the extra point, the Eagles led 14-0.

Barrington was not done scoring.

A short time later, McClelland showed off his passing arm, drilling a 15-yard touchdown pass to Evan Anderson. Barrington’s defense got the ball back for the offense, and McClelland went to work again — his second touchdown pass went for 40 yards to Jack Robinson. The spiral hit Robinson in stride as he sprinted into the end zone.

Barrington entered halftime leading the Rebels 27-0.

The Eagles’ defense was stellar throughout — after allowing one long run, Barrington shut down South Kingstown’s rushing and passing games. The Rebels finished with 89 yards on the ground, 19 through the air and four turnovers.

Barrington’s Chucky Potter intercepted two passes. Chucky’s brother Charly Potter forced a fumble that was recovered by Troy Van Ness.

South Kingstown managed a touchdown in the third quarter, but Barrington quickly responded with a scoring drive. McClelland found Spencer Proulx on a 50-yard connection, and DiOrio capped that drive with a touchdown run. A short time later, DiOrio barreled into the end zone for his third TD of the game.

DiOrio carried the ball 13 times for 69 yards and two touchdowns. McClelland ran the ball five times for 64 yards and one touchdown. Mitchell Ivatts, who played well on both sides of the ball, carried the ball twice for 37 yards. Charly Potter rushed five times for 32 yards.

In total, Barrington rushed the ball 29 times for 206 yards and three touchdowns.

McClelland completed five of nine pass attempts for 105 yards and two touchdowns.

Barrington is scheduled to play at Division 1 North Kingstown in a cross-over game on Friday, Oct. 13. The game kicks off at 7 p.m.
