The Barrington Minors Division All-Star softball team battled back from 7-5 deficit in the fourth inning to knock off Portsmouth 11-8 in a winner’s bracket showdown on Wednesday night, July 6, at Barrington High School.

Barrington jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the top half of the first inning, but Portsmouth whittled away at the lead, cutting it to 4-1 after the first inning, and 4-3 after two.

Portsmouth took a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Barrington manufactured two runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game. And in the top of the sixth inning, Barrington scored four runs. Claire Bickford hit an infield fly to second base, but the ball was mis-handled and Bickford reached base.

Carly Gill entered the game as a pinch-runner and quickly stole second. The Portsmouth catcher tried to throw out Gill, but the throw bounced into centerfield. Gill then sprinted to third and then barreled home for the go-ahead run.

Angie Promades dropped a bunt single, and Lucy LoVerme reached base also. Ava Lucas then crushed a pitch into right field and rounded the bases — it was Lucas’s second homer of the night.

Barrington carried an 11-7 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, and while Portsmouth threatened, they could only plate one run.

Lucy LoVerme pitched a complete game for Barrington.

The win pushes Barrington into the winner’s bracket final. Portsmouth was scheduled to play against Middletown in the elimination bracket final on Thursday night, July 7. Middletown knocked Tiverton out of the tournament on Wednesday night.

On Friday, July 8, Barrington will play the winner of the Portsmouth-Middletown game.
