All of Rhode Island and the farm coast of Massachusetts — indeed, much of the northern half of the United States — got a rare treat Thursday evening with a rare visit by aurora borealis, the northern lights.
Vivid hues of red, green and purple lasted about 15 minutes during a flare-up visible in Bristol around 7:15 p.m.
The rare occurance is the result of a geomagnetic storm that arrived Thursday and is expected to continue through Friday. Forecasters say more aurora sightings are possible Thursday evening into Friday morning.
