Wildcats 'getting better' while fighting through difficult season

Westport succumbs to New Heights 65-40

The Westport basketball team held a first-half lead before succumbing to New Heights Charter School of Brockton, 65-40 during a non-league home game on Friday night. The loss dropped the Wildcats record to 1-14 and 1-5 in the MAC. Despite the record, Westport head coach is enjoying coaching the team this season.
“I love coaching these kids,” he said.  "I have no problem at all with how the season's going, because we're getting better every game. And that's all any coach can ask of their players to get better and better. We're playing a more competitive schedule, but we're learning every game. We're trying to figure out. And at times, we look really good.”
Westport looked great in the first half, running out to a 15-5 first quarter lead and 28-23 lead at halftime. Junior guard Will DeJesus scored eleven of his team high 17 points in the half and Dane Leary drained a pair of 3-pointers, while the Wildcats were playing excellent defense against the 5th seeded Phoenix.
But New Heights woke from their slumber and outscored the Wildcats 42-12 in the second half. Westport had difficulty defending Phoenix guard Mecca Limage and bigs, Justin Ryans and Josh Quental, once they got on track. Limage netted 15 of his game high 23 points; Ryans scored ten of 16 and Quental netted nine of his 11 points.
“It’s the inconsistencies that we really need to be working on,” Coach Boudria said. “We're getting better. We're competing into the fourth quarter. I can't get mad at that. And No one's throwing chairs, no one's getting upset. Instead, they just keep working hard. So, I'll fight with these guys. I've no problem with that.”
Westport scoring: Will DeJesus 17, Dane Leary 8, Cole Boudria 7, Cam Wilkinson 4, Jackson Chase 4.
Next up: Westport hosts Atlantis Charter on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 5 p.m. and travels to Avon on Thursday, Feb. 5, at 6:30 p.m.
