Wildcats crush Cape Cod Tech 13-1 on senior day

Posted

The Westport lacrosse team celebrated their senior day by crushing Cape Cod Tech 13-1 during a league home game on Friday afternoon. The win boosted the Wildcats’ record to 5-9. Senior captains Avery Viveros, Coltrane McGonigle, Matt Borges and Nick Costa, along with fellow seniors, Tyler Arrial and Shaun Desroches were honored before the game.

“Our senior game, the first for Westport, was very bittersweet,” said head coach Matt Shivers. “The seniors were instrumental in bringing the team to Westport and have led the team over the course of the season.  They have been a big part of setting up this team as a legacy. In addition to their individual success on the field, I think that's something they can take away from this season with pride.”

Eight different players scored for Westport in the onslaught. McGonigle and Viveros led the Wildcats, scoring 3 goals each. McGonigle,  who currently has 81 career varsity points, is within range of reaching 100 total points.

“It’s a milestone that is somewhat equivalent to reaching 1000 points in basketball,” said Coach Shivers. “We hope to see him reach that milestone within the last four games of the season.”

Sophomore Will Quinlan netted 2 goals, Isaiah Poydras, Nick Costa, Shaun DesRoches, Jake Cross and Julia George each scored a goal. Desroches, the Wildcats’ goalkeeper, made 6 saves before playing out late in the game and scoring a goal. Sophomore Colleen Smith replaced Desroches in goal and made 2 saves.

Overall we played very well,” Coach Shivers said. “Scoring was spread out around the team. In lacrosse both assists and goals count as a stat point. Many times the person with the assist actually did the majority of the work for creating the goals.”

Senior Tyler Arrial tallied 2 assists as did Quinlan. McGonigle, Viveros, Poydras, Matt Costa and Nick Stanton also assisted on goals for Westport.

Coach Shivers heralded Cross, a sophomore, for his work on faceoffs during the game.

“Jake has an incredible faceoff win percentage,” he said. “Faceoffs occur at the start of each quarter and after each goal. They are a huge and difficult part of the game.”

He also lauded defenders, Borges, junior Hunter Mateus and sophomore Ben Hunt.

“All of our D-Pole players gave standout defensive performances,” he said. “The whole team played well, both individually and as a team. It's very gratifying to see the team clicking and the success being spread around and not originating from just a single player. Obviously we saw a lot of very good play from the seniors, especially impressive offensive success from both Avery and Coltrane and defensively from Nick Costa and Matt Borges.”

The Wildcats have four games left and are looking to climb into the playoff hunt

Ultimately we are hoping to build on our success,” said Coach Shivers. “We don't have the strongest record possible, but for essentially a first year team, and competing very closely in many of those games, I am very optimistic for the last few games of the season. The way that the team has grown, the future of Westport lacrosse looks bright.”
