Financial and quality control issues that forced the temporary closure of a crucial Westport slaughterhouse have apparently been resolved, and Meatworks is expected to re-open next Monday, April 15.
The State Road slaughterhouse was founded by the Livestock Institute and has been a vital resource for Westport and area farmers. But the company closed temporarily about a month ago, leaving producers with nowhere local to bring their products. Mike Previant, of the board of directors of The Livestock Institute, which founded Meatworks, held a meeting with farmers and other concerned citizens in mid-March, where he laid out a list of financial and internal changes that needed to be made in order for Meatworks to open.
“We know that this is difficult and we apologize,” he wrote.
At the meeting, Previant stated that if the company was able to address its issues, executives planned to re-open next Monday.
Last week, Previant said that the business will re-open as planned, with newly hired CEO Keith Wilda leading the organization and running the plant.
“Keith is looking forward to working with producers and the community in re-establishing Meatworks as the best choice for livestock,” he wrote in an update. “Thanks for all your patience and understanding.”
Previant noted that while commercial livestock operations resume Monday, Meatworks’ retail store will re-open in a few weeks.
