Town back in business Friday, following signing of new five-year pact with provider

The Westport Transfer Station is once again accepting household waste, after service was suspended earlier this week due to problems with the town's former trash provider.

On Monday, the Board of Health's Matt Armendo was forced to close the station to household trash, bulky items and construction debris after the firm that normally accepts the town's hauled waste informed him that it would not be able to accept any more in the near future, following logistical issues. Mr. Armendo, who had already been looking for a new partner for several weeks, was able to put the issue on the select board's agenda that night. At the meeting, the board approved a new five-year pact with Covanta Sustainable Solutions LLC, which agreed to start accepting the town's trash next Monday at its facility in West Wareham. Covanta will charge $90 per ton of household waste, substantially less than the $140 the former operator, ABC of New Bedford, charged. However, Covanta cannot accept bulky items or construction debris.

On Friday, the board's Tanja Ryden said that while Covanta cannot start until next Monday, the town had worked out an arrangement with other trash companies, to accept trash until that date.

"Everything's back up and running," she said.

As for bulky and construction-related items, she said Westport still has the capacity and ability to accept them; they will be handled by other firms, she said.
