Superintendent said threat is not local, but police contacted in abundance of caution

Westport police will be on hand at all public schools Friday, after school officials learned of a threat to "every school in the USA, even elementary," posted on the social media platform Tik Tok this week.

Superintendent Thomas Aubin said the threat, while not originating in Westport, is concerning.

"While we do not believe the threat to be credible, we closely monitor the situation and take it seriously," he wrote in a letter to families Thursday afternoon.

Aubin contacted Westport Police Chief George Pelletier, and said officers will be posted in all local schools Friday. He also said the threat is a good example of why it is important to avoid sharing online posts that refer to school safety and threats:

"Even if they are not credible threats, they can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety for our students, families and staff. We ask our families to monitor their children's social media activity and speak with them about proper behavior online. If you or your child become aware of any potential threat posted to social media or anywhere else, please notify a school staff member or trusted adult right away."
