A Westport man faces eight assault and other charges after police said he assaulted a father and one of his sons with a baseball bat, and threw rocks at and exposed himself to them Sunday evening.
Before being arrested, Paul Correia, 51, of 9 Whalon Way, called police Sunday at about 6:18 p.m. to complain that three ATV riders were trespassing on his property. He told police that the ATV riders — a father and two sons — were doing donuts in his gravel driveway and he alleged that one of them pulled a machete on him and threatened him. He had seen them on his property before, he said, and wanted them to stop.
As police investigated the complaint, one of the ATV operators called police, who met him at the department’s substation on State Road. He told police that while he did have a machete on his ATV, he did not brandish it and noted that Corriea accused his two sons of yelling and swearing at his wife earlier in the day.
During the altercation, he said, Mr. Correia threw rocks at him and his sons, grabbed a baseball bat from his yard and threw it at him, striking him and one of his sons, and then pulled down his pants, exposing himself to them. At that point, he told his sons to drive away, and the three of them left.
In a follow-up conversation, Correia allegedly told police he did nothing to the three riders, and denied owning a bat. After police charged him with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (the bat), three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon (rocks) and three counts of open and gross lewdness, police said Correia “stated he had thrown the bat and should not have lied about it.”
