Westport police have charged a Cornell Road man with stealing Christmas presents and other items from his neighbors over the past three months.

Armed with search and arrests warrants, police on Monday arrested John A. Taylor III, 51, charging him with four counts of larceny under $1,200, identity fraud, attempting to commit a crime, shoplifting and receiving stolen property under $1,200.

He was arrested following an investigation by the Westport Police Department that started last November, when police began taking reports of mail and packages stolen from mailboxes along Cornell Road, Judge's Way and Perseverance Lane. Police said a majority of the items taken were Christmas presents and mail containing personal information.

Once they identified Taylor as a suspect, police learned he had obtained banking information from a neighbor and used it to fund his PayPal account. Police said he was also captured on surveillance cameras shoplifting at Lee's Market.

As a result of the search warrant, police recovered numerous stolen items, as well as clothing, hats and accessories also believed to be stolen.

If you have been a victim of theft and have not reported it to the Westport Police Department, contact Detective Turner Ryan at 501-636-1122.
