Westport will unveil a new monument to local mariners lost at sea this coming Sunday, Sept. 8, at the end of Main Road at Westport Point.
There has been a small granite monument at the turnaround since the 1990s, when the 31 names inscribed on it were researched by the late Cukie Macomber. But over the past several years researchers including Westport librarian Robin Winters and historians Betty Slade and Richard Gifford identified more than 30 more, in large part thanks to improved technology not available when Macomber spent several years on the project.
The dedication starts at 3 p.m., and all are welcome. It will last about 30 minutes, and those who would prefer to sit should bring folding chairs. Parking could be an issue so Slade suggested that if you have friends along lower Main Road, consider asking to park in their driveways.
The ceremony will include brief remarks, performance by Wampanoag drummers, and more. The raindate is the following Sunday, Sept. 15.
