Westport Fire Department wins grants for equipment, programs

The Westport Fire Department announces that over the past several months it have been awarded multiple grants, totaling $31,504.

The department received two grants totaling $9,200 from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) for the replacement of multiple Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus storage bottles. These bottles are an essential component of a firefighter’s personal protective equipment and must be replaced every 15 years.

The department also received $14,343 in grant money from the Department of Fire Services. These funds will be used to purchase three complete sets of firefighter turnout gear.

National Fire Protection regulations require that a firefighter's turnout gear be retired 10 years from the date of manufacture.

“At a cost of nearly $5,000 per set, this requirement can be quite costly and difficult to adhere to. We are fortunate to have received this funding to help offset the cost of purchasing this much needed equipment,” the department said.

In addition, the state has awarded the department $5,281 in funding for its Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) program, and $2,680 for its successful senior SAFE program. These funds allow the department to educate and assist a wide variety of residents throughout our town.

The Westport department continues to seek out and apply for various types of grant funding. “We currently have several grant applications that are pending review and we are hopeful that our success will continue.”
