Westport finishes ninth in state soccer tourney

Posted

The Westport United Grade 5 Girls' Soccer Team competed at the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions over the last weekend of June, marking the first time in 23 years that Westport had entered a team into the tournament. They finished in ninth place overall.

Out of a pool of 12 fifth and sixth grade girls' teams from around the state, the Westport United Team consists of fourth and fifth graders, with one third grader. The girls put in a great effort playing against older teams and never gave up. They lost the first two games, but were able to win the last game of the tournament, 4-2, against Westfield. The team was recognized and won the  sportsmanship award for their division. Though state competition is over, the girls will be participating in private tournaments this summer and look forward to another opportunity in the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions next year.

"The Massachusetts Tournament Of Champions was a great experience for the girls," Coach Justin Gendreau said :Reaching this goal on the first year of eligibility shows how hard these girls work. I'm very proud of them for winning the Sportsmanship award. I can't wait to see what they can accomplish in the future and I have no doubt that these girls will be returning to the MTOC next season."
