Casey Brown is just seven years old. But he put together what could be the most successful lemonade stand in Westport’s history Friday, collecting $2,000 over eight hours to help his extended family as they cope with an unexpected medical emergency.

“It was awesome,” Casey’s mother, Jessica Dechaine, said. “He did so great — I’m proud of him.”

The funds go to a cause near and dear to Casey’s family. His cousin Charlotte Dechaine was born with breathing issues and a lung infection on Thursday, July 25, and has spent much of her short life in the neonatal intensive care unit at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

When Casey heard about his young cousin’s difficulties, he volunteered to help.

“He’d been wanting to do a lemonade stand for a while but we hadn’t had a chance yet,” his mom said. “He said, ‘Let’s do it and I’ll give all the money to Charlotte.”

Family members spread the word, and Casey, his friends and family spent eight hours in front of their Chabot Street home Friday, starting at noon and stopping at 8 p.m. Turnout was far beyond what they’d hoped for and in the end, Casey collected about $1,200 in cash, $600 in Venmo payments and a $250 check from the Westport police union. The lemonade flowed freely throughout the day and Casey made gallons of it, and there were other offerings at his small stand as well, including pastries donated by Christopher’s of Fall River.

“They were amazing,” Dechaine said of Christopher’s, and of all who came and donated.

The funds will be put to good use. Though Charlotte was transferred out of the NICU over the weekend and is currently hospitalized in Dover, N.H., closer to her family’s New Hampshire home, the family’s expenses continue.

Casey’s mother said funds raised Friday, as well as through a gofundme page, will help the family defray the enormous costs they face as they support Charlotte’s recovery.

“She’s a little bit better, but there’s still a long way to go,” she said.
