Gary Reese resigns as Westport schools superintendent

Thomas Aubin named interim superintendent

Posted

The Westport School Committee announced Monday that Superintendent Dr. Gary Reese, who has been on a leave of absence since Sept. 18, 2020, will be resigning effective Nov. 30.

No further details were provided.

Asked two weeks ago about Supt. Reese’s sudden leave of absence just as the schools were beginning their reopening, Mr. Aubin said he could not comment, calling it a personnel matter. Today that word was changed to "personal" reasons.

Acting Superintendent Thomas F. Aubin will serve as the interim superintendent going forward, the district said. “Mr. Aubin has been at the forefront of implementing the district’s COVID-19 re-entry plan since Dr. Reese’s leave of absence.”

The Westport School Committee voted unanimously to appoint Mr. Aubin interim superintendent at its meeting on Thursday, Oct. 15.

Mr. Aubin joined the district in May and had served as the superintendent/director of the Greater Fall River Vocational School District since 2016. He previously served as vocational coordinator of that district for 13 years, as well as a year as the district’s dean of students.

The Westport School Committee also voted at their Oct. 15 meeting to appoint Junior Senior High School Assistant Principal Kerri McKinnon as the interim assistant superintendent/principal.
