Rebello pegged for Deputy Westport Police Chief

Veteran officer recommended by incoming chief Christopher Dunn

Robert Rebello, who applied for but was passed over for the vacant Westport Police Chief’s position last month, could be Westport’s next Deputy Chief of Police, following Monday’s meeting of the Westport Select Board.

Board members are expected to vote on the recommendation of Chief Christopher Dunn, who himself was named chief by the board last month. Dunn said Rebello is a perfect fit for the job — “his experience makes him a valuable asset.”

“To me being a good leader is knowing your weaknesses,” Dunn said before the meeting. “Some of my weaknesses are Rob’s strengths. Selecting him would make us a better team.”

Rebello, who if appointed would  be sworn in on Thurday, Feb. 1, replaces former Deputy Chief John Bell, who retired earlier this month.

A lifelong Westporter, Rebello earned a bachelor’s in environmental science with a minor in chemistry, working in that field until earning a master’s degree in education and becoming a teacher. Later, he became a reserve officer, joined the force as a patrolman and later transitioned to the detectives’ division before going back to school for a second masters in criminal justice, and making sergeant. He has been on the force for 10 years.

As for his feelings on his future in the department, he said in an interview late last year, “every time I move forward ... I do everything with intentionality. “I’m excited about the opportunity. I’m 100 percent committed to the Westport Police Department and more importantly, to the Town of Westport. I think I’ve earned the trust and respect of my fellow officers.”
