Central midfielder Will Quinlan, a co-captain, scored 4 goals as the Westport soccer team annihilated Avon 8-0 in an away game on Friday afternoon. Zachary Lopes, Nyzaiah Pacheco, Andre Jusseame, and Max Gallant also scored for the Wildcats, who improved their record to 7-3-2 and 6-1-0 in the MAC.

Noah Amaral and Elijah McGonigle earned the shutout for Westport, the team’s fourth of the season.

The Wildcats currently have a power record of 16 as they begin to look towards the D-5 tournament with just six regular season games to go.

Field hockey team blanks Carver 2-0, qualifies for tournament play

Hailey Koster and Bella Babb scored as the Westport field hockey team beat Carver 2-0 in an away game on Friday to improve their record to 9-3-1 and 4-0 in the MAC. The win qualified the Wildcats for a spot in D-5 tournament.

Striker Maddie Melnyk assisted on both goals for the Wildcats, who sustained injuries to veterans, Makayla Grace and Kaylin Pacheco during the game.

“We emptied our bench of our subs,” said head coach Susie Fontaine. “That's a tough situation for any team, but through tremendous effort, each player drew on their personal fortitude and fought for the team win.”

Jada Thurston, a co-captain, donned the goalie gear for the second time and made four saves to record a shutout, her second, said Coach Fontaine. Co-captain Colleen Smith, the Wildcats’ sweeper helped to defend the goal by repelling many attacks before they reached Thurston.

Westport clung to a 1-0 lead after Koster, a freshman, scored in the first quarter. Babb, a sophomore who scored in the fourth quarter, gave the Wildcats much needed breathing room as they sustained the win.

“Co-captain Emma Bessette was our all-star player of the game,” said Coach Fontaine, who had praise for the entire team. “She was everywhere on the field. Filling the gaps, stopping attacks and feeding the ball up to the forward line.”

Golf team wins MAC tourney, volleyball, girls soccer win too

The golf team won the MAC tournament and also beat Durfee, Diman and Seekonk last week to improve their record to 11-3-1. With their season finished, they look to do damage at the state tournament on Tuesday morning at The Ridge Club in Sandwich.

The girls volleyball team beat Atlantis Charter 3-0 during a home game on Friday, to improve their record to 9-6. The girls soccer team shut out Avon in a home game on Thursday afternoon, to improve their record to 9-1-2.
