Oscar M. Sylvia Jr., 85, Westport

Oscar M. Sylvia Jr., 85, of Westport, passed away on Thursday, July 8, 2021 at Clifton Rehabilitative Nursing Center.  He was the husband of Edyth B. Barton Sylvia.

Born in Fall River, son of the late Oscar M. Sylvia Sr., and the late Luella Nickerson.  He grew up in both Little Compton and Westport and lived in Westport for most of his life.  He graduated from the Josephine F. Wilbur High School. 

He enlisted in the Air Force in 1954 and served in both the United States and Japan.  He taught for 20 years at the B.M.C. Durfee High School in the Small Engine Repair Department.  He also had a small engine repair business in both Westport and Somerset.  He then started a successful landscaping business and continued for over 30 years.  

Mr. Sylvia was an avid collector of old cars, at one time having 18 classic cars.  He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and his loving dog Molly.

Including his wife, he is survived by a son, Donald Sylvia and his wife Sue; two daughters, Pamela J. Johnson and her husband John, and Deborah L. Franklin and her husband Anthony; a step-daughter, Beth M. Arrington; a step-son, Scott W. Arrington; two sisters, Cynthia Hawkins and Cheryl Despenza; six grandchildren, Courtney Sylvia, Scott Sylvia, Kai Franklin, Myah Franklin, Brady Arrington and Katelyn Arrington; and several nieces and nephews..

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 5-8 p.m.. at the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Rd., Westport.

Funeral services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38101.
