Maria F.V. Fernandes Silva, 66, Westport

Maria Filomena Viveiros Fernandes Silva, 66, of Westport, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 6, 2021, following a long illness. She was the wife of Nomesio Jose Pimentel Silva.

Mrs. Silva was born in Ajuda, Bretanha, Sao Miguel, Azores, daughter of the late Jose Remigio and Helena C. (Viveiros) Fernandes, and had been a resident of Westport since 2006. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a CNA for Clifton Rehabilitation Nursing Center, Somerset. 

She was an avid reader and gardener. She enjoyed singing, sewing and learning new things. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Grace Church, Westport.

Survivors, along with her husband, include her son, Marcilio A. Silva and Kady Silva of Fall River, her two daughters, Narcisa S. Nasrallah and her husband Ziad of Swansea, and Darcilia F.S. Costa and her husband Silas of Acushnet; three sisters, Maria Helena Raposo of Sao Miguel, Maria de Fatima Pavao of Fall River, and Teresa Paulo of Dartmouth; two grandchildren, Mason and Micah; and many nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Jose V. Fernandes.

Her funeral, to which relatives and friends are invited, will be Thursday, March 11, from the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, Westport, at 9 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Grace Church, Westport, at 10 am. 

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 5-7 pm. Interment will be in Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA, 02284.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
