Letter: Little Compton Republican Town Committee steps up for Brownell House

Posted

To the editor:

The Village Improvement Society was created in 1913 to work for the general welfare of all the townspeople of Little Compton. The mission has been: To promote and support charitable, educational  and social activities in the town of Little Compton.

In 1915 Edmund Brownell Weston set up a trust to convey the Brownell House (no endowment attached) to the Little Compton Village Improvement Society.

For 114 years The Village Improvement Society has maintained the Brownell House as a place for all Little Compton residents, this is your house.

The last significant work on the house was in 2006 as a result of a Champlin Foundation grant.

This fall, the Little Compton Republican Town Committee contacted the Society with the offer of contributing to the house in recognition of the significant position and usefulness of this town resource. What was agreed on was one of the most needed repairs to the house.

Thanks to the Town Committee and especially to Mike Rocha, a master stone worker, we now have a new set of steps to come into the house! After years (114) of teetering on the top step and juggling the door, we have a safe, easy and beautiful new entry. We of the Village Improvement Society are forever grateful for this lasting contribution to an often overlooked landmark in our town.

We would like everyone to have a glance or a longer look as you drive by the Brownell House, and think about the benefits of Community.

Merry Christmas to all,

Mikel Folcarelli, Penny Walker, Randy Watt, Martha Sherman, Lease Plimpton, David Peckham, Barbara Rocha, Amanda Nickerson Toste

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
