Letter: Balloons are fouling our beaches and bays

Posted

To the editor:

Since balloons have recently become a topical subject in Little Compton, I would like to resubmit a letter and photograph that were printed in the Westport Shorelines on July 3, 2013:

"Yesterday, I picked up 52 party balloons along a one mile stretch of Horseneck Beach. Please do not release helium balloons outdoors. They not only return to earth as litter, they and their attached ribbons are a serious hazard to marine life. There are also much more important uses for our dwindling supply of helium. See www.balloonsblow.org."

This was written after a storm but rarely can you walk the beach or be out on the bay and not encounter balloons. If you tossed one out your car window you would be fined for littering.

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
