To the editor:

A is America the Beautiful and the home of the brave.

B is the beauty of America's national parks.

C is our Constitution, our governing document.

D is the Declaration of Independence, our founding document.

E is the East Wing; may it be returned to its original glory.

F is the freedoms we hold dear and that are enshrined in our Constitution.

G is the Grand Old Flag, immortalized in song.

H is our history of welcoming immigrants.

I is the immigrants who built this country.

J is our independent judiciary.

K is no kings allowed to govern us.

L is the Liberty Bell.

M is the many ethnicities among Americans.

N is the Supreme Court justices who uphold our Constitution.

O is our love of the open road.

P is our right to protest.

Q is our right to question those who govern us.

R is the racism we struggle to overcome.

S is our history of slavery, which we continue to work to redress.

T is the tradition of town halls, still strong in our country.

U is the 50 states that stay united, forming the United States.

V is Valley Forge, an important part of our Revolution.

W is Washington, our first president.

X is the excellence of thought among our founders.

Y is years of bipartisanship in Congress.

Z is America overcoming zealotry over and over again.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
