Janice Maynard, 91, formerly of Westport

Janice (Braley) Maynard, 91, formerly of Westport and Fairhaven, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2019, in Sacred Heart Nursing Home. She was the loving widow of Norman B. Maynard.

Born in New Bedford, a daughter of the late Eli Gifford and Gladys (Fish) Braley, she was a lifelong area resident.

Mrs. Maynard graduated from Fairhaven High School in 1945 and Connecticut College in 1949. She was a stay at home mom for many years and began her career when her children were older. Janice taught learning disabled students for Fall River Public Schools, then she worked as manager of Special Education Central Records and as Liaison Out of District Placement for Students with Special Needs. She eventually retired in 1992. She also worked as a tutor in Fairhaven for three years.

Janice was a member of the Jaycee’s of Greater New Bedford, the Unitarian Church Mother’s Club, a Girl Scout leader, and a Fairhaven Town Meeting member. She was an avid golfer and had a great love for boating and travel.

She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth “Liz” Isherwood-Moore of Dartmouth, Catherine Tveit and her husband Arstein of Westport; four grandchildren, Allison Isherwood of Marion, Abbie Chambers of Westport, Ashley and Catherine Underwood of Fort Pierce, Florida; five great grandchildren, Nicholas and Ella Claudio of Marion, and Grayson, Abigail and Gavin Gilliland of Fort Pierce, Florida; a son-in-law, G. Daniel Underwood of Fort Pierce, Florida and sister-in-law, Roberta Braley of Fairhaven; and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her brother Eli G. “Giff” Braley, daughter, Abbie Underwood and her son-in-law, John D. Moore.

Her memorial visitation will be Monday, June 17, 10 to 11 a.m. in Waring-Sullivan Home at Fairlawn, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven, with a memorial service at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery.
