There's still time to sponsor an entry in Mass Audubon's much-anticipated Duck Derby, which races this Friday, August 25.
The popular fund-raiser annually features thousands of rubber ducks "purchased" by hundreds of human supporters that “race” — actually, they just float on the tide — into Allens Pond on the rising tidal waters of Buzzards Bay. The first duck to cross the finish line wins the grand prize: A $5,000 cash award. Other prizes include a Mass Audubon “swag bag” full of merchandise, and special recognition for the esteemed “Slacker Quaker” — the entrant that brings up the rear.
A limited number of derby devotees can follow the action as their favorites finesse the course and race for the finish line. This is a staff-guided walk, as it involves crossing private property. Paid registration is $20 per person, which includes a duck entry.
The event supports an array of Allens Pond and Mass Audubon ecological programs, including salt marsh restoration and other climate resilience work.
“Duck Derby is a great way to support Mass Audubon’s mission to connect people and nature, as well as the important work taking place at Allens Pond and along the South Coast,” Gina Purtell, Allens Pond Community Science and Coastal Resilience Manager, said. “With climate change a growing threat to both humans and wildlife ... supporters of the derby can engage with a fun event while taking meaningful action.”
As of Friday, 1,200 ducks had been sold, but organizers believe the final total will be much higher. Purchase your duck here.
