Fire crews from Tiverton, Fall River and Westport were called to a Nanaquaket Road home Thursday afternoon to fight a fire in a historic 1760 home.
Tiverton Fire Deputy Chief Joshua Ferreira said dispatchers received a call at about 2:30 p.m. regarding a fire of unknown origin at 575 Nanaquaket Road.
Due to the size of the home, upwards of 30 firefighters were on the scene after a third alarm was called.
“Crews made an aggressive interior attack on this house and we were able to the get to the scene of the fire, extinguishing it with minimal damage to the structure itself," the deputy chief said.
Due to the lack of hydrants in the area, extra manpower was needed to get water to the area, and firefighters filled emergency tankers from a hydrant elsewhere on Nanaquaket Road.
The fire was extinguished approximately 20 minutes after fire crews arrived. Though the cause remains unknown, Ferreira pointed out that the house, originally constructed around 1760, was roofed with older cedar shingles, in contrast to the asphalt shingles typically found on contemporary homes. They may have contributed to the fire's rapid spread, he said.
No major injuries were sustained, although one firefighter was checked for minor injuries. Apart from some exterior damage, minor damage was reported to the home's third floor.
