Junior Owen Boudria scored the 1000th point of his career in the fourth quarter of the Westport Basketball team’s 62-54 loss to Fairhaven in a non-league home game on Friday night. The athletic Boudria, sporting a sore ankle he suffered in the Southeastern game, was stupendous, scoring 32 points in the loss as the Wildcats’ dropped their record to 5-9. Assistant coach Lloyd Aurora called a time out after Boudria scored his 28th point with a one-handed layup from under the basket. His mom appeared from the stands with a large sign. She met the star at half court and they hugged and posed for a photo. His teammates joined them and lifted their jerseys to reveal special shirts to celebrate the achievement.
“It felt unreal,” said Boudria after the game. “It’s a blessing to have honestly.”
After he hit the shot, he said he felt the love from his teammates, coaches and his family.
“I knew I put in the hard work. I knew I put in the effort. It was my dedication. It’s a great thing to have,” he said of reaching the mark. I’m proud of my self, but I’m also proud of my dad, who couldn’t be here. He was the one that pushed me and kept on pushing me. I’m thankful for him.”
“I’m so happy for my son,” said is dad, Scot Boudria in a phone call. The head coach was tossed during the 57-46 loss to Southeastern on Tuesday night. “He deserves it. He works his tail off. He plays hard. He plays smart. I’m happy for him.”
Blue Devils outgun Wildcats in the first half
Fairhaven took a 29-18 lead into halftime as Westport was out-manned, out-hustled, out-passed and out-gunned against the bigger and depth laden Division 3 Blue Devils.
For the Wildcats, Cole Boudria scored 7, Will Quinlan, Nick Stanton and Dane Leary each scored 3 points, Max Gallant, Chris Duarte and Anthony Raposa each scored 2.
Boudria put on a show and made it a game, scoring 22 points in the second half. He matched his first half point total in the third quarter, draining two 3-pointers, a jumper and a pair of free-throws. Fairhaven, who took out their starters to start the fourth, inserted them back in as Boudria continued his tear.
“My mindset was to win this game,” Boudria said. “I’m grateful to hit my 1000. I didn’t really care what night it was on. I just wanted to get the win.”
The slippery guard consistently beat the Blue Devils’ double-team to get to the hoop. Westport chipped at the lead and closed to 48-41 with 6 minutes left.
But, Blue Devils’ guard Ryan Ptaszenski sank a pair of 3-pointers in the final quarter to hold off the charging Wildcats.
Fairhaven made their free-throws down the stretch to end the game and Boudria’s special night.
