There is still more to do. But the new nautical-themed playground at the Town Hall Annex on Main Road should be ready for a proper ribbon-cutting some time this fall.
The new playground, which has been under construction for a good part of the summer, is almost done, recreation director Dana Stewart said. But before it can officially open to the public, some work around the periphery needs to be completed — finishing up the border, detailing areas around the memorial brick areas, and the like.
“We’re really proud of it,” Stewart said. “My favorite part is the whale.”
The playground, paid for with town funds, grants and donations, has a distinctly nautical theme and apart from the whale, which appears to be breaching from the sand, there are sea turtles, ships and other features that harken back to Westport’s maritime past. There’s a slide that has roller balls along it, an inground spinner, a multi-person seasaw, and even a section that plays recordings of different types of water — rivers, waterfalls and the like.
Dana said no date has yet been set for the grand opening and ribbon cutting, but she expects early to mid-fall.
