Alfred James Wood, 73, of Coventry, passed away on Sunday, May 2, 2021. Al (Woody) was born in Pawtucket, RI, the second child to the late James A. Wood and the late Helen (Horton) Wood. Raised in Barrington, Al was a 1967 graduate of Barrington High School.

Al loved working on cars and anything with an engine. He started helping out at Mac’s Gulf in West Barrington when he was 15 years old and continued his love with cars, a certified 5-Star Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep Mechanic, he was giving advice and fixing cars over the phone right till the end. He could do anything with his hands, whether working on cars, trucks, small engines, marine engines, he could fix anything. Also a craftsmen with his woodworking and welding, he enjoyed making lawn art and remodeling his property. He loved drag racing in his early years and was active in every aspect as mechanic, driver, and owner. He also loved his Harley Davidson days, and trips to Laconia.

Al had a big heart and was the first to lend a helping hand to a long-time friend or someone he just met. He also spent 16 years with the VFW in Coventry and started a raffle to support the various charities, he was all in at helping veterans. A lifelong member of the East Providence Elks Club, Al was a busy guy. His summer clambakes were the best, he invited everyone he knew and was the bake master for the traditional New England clambake, including a country music band and topped off with a fireworks display.

He enjoyed his days on Narragansett Bay, starting with his first boat when he was 13, and taking trips to Martha’s Vineyard to visit family in his 22’-foot Luhrs which he kept at Lavin’s Marina.

Al is survived by his three sons, David, Jason, and Dylan Wood. His son Christopher predeceased him. He is also survived by his companion of many years, Kerry Fleming and her children Andrew, Jennifer, and Ryan Fleming. He leaves his sister, Sandra (Wood) MacGregor and her late husband Bob, brother Joel Wood and his wife Susan. He leaves his four loving grandchildren. He was adored by his niece and nephews for his unending wit and advice. He will be missed by his lifelong friend Al Girard and his many other friends and extended family.

A family gathering will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the RI Veterans Home, 480 Metacom Ave, Bristol, RI 02809.

Please include Al’s name in the memo section of your check.
