Taken from the pages of the Westport Shorelines this week in 2005:

No RVs at the beach

Select board members in a split vote banned recreational vehicles and campers from Cherry & Webb and East beaches, despite protests from some residents who said the ban amounts to discrimination against the owners of those vehicles.

But beach committee members, who recommended the change, said one major consideration was limited parking, and the inordinate space large campers and RVs take up.

Two fire chief hopefuls

Deputy fire chief Brian Legendre was one of two candidates to express interest in succeeding Chief Stephen Motta, who was expected to retire in January 2006. Legendre ended up getting the job and held it until his retirement two years ago. Chief Daniel Baldwin succeeded him.

Whaler’s logs

Logs written at sea by two Westport-based whalers came back home following their acquisition by the Westport Historical Society — one was found in Maine, the other in Oregon.

The logs written by Albert Gifford, a harpooner, boat steerer and later, first mate in the 1840s, and Henry B. Gifford, whose logs date from 1834 to 1838.
