The impressive, double-figure unbeaten streak to start the 2024 season by the Mt. Hope High School boys' soccer team came to a halt Tuesday night, Oct. 8, when the Huskies fell to host Shea, 2-0, at Max Read Field in Pawtucket.

Cristhian Rivero and Diogo Alfama each scored goals in the first half for the Raiders, who improved to 8-1-1 overall and 7-1-1 in the Division II ranks. The victory upped Shea's own winning run to a likewise stout seven in a row.

For Mt. Hope, the locals' undefeated stretch came to a close at 11. The Huskies saw their record move to 8-1-3 both overall and in the league. Mt. Hope's outright winning streak also ended at seven on the trot with the defeat.

"I thought that we played well," said MHHS head coach Tucker Shepard. "We had possession majority of the game. We just couldn’t create chances in the offensive third and they finished the chances that they had on us. It was a hard-fought game but in the end they just wanted it more."

Cole Tavares was credited with six saves in the Mt. Hope net. Shepard said the Huskies' offensive threatened a little bit in the Shea end, but the locals just couldn’t break the Raiders' defense down.

Girls' volleyball
The MHHS girls' volleyball squad began last week by continuing its own winning stretch, upping its match victory streak to four following a 3-2 victory over Lincoln High at home Wednesday night, Oct. 9.

The Huskies edged the Lions by the scored of 17-25, 25-20, 16-25, 25-20 and 15-13. Abby Allen had 12 kills and three blocks to lead the Mt. Hope offense. Mia Hanson had 18 digs. And Sarah Wilcox added nine kills and 13 digs. The Huskies improved to 8-5 overall with the win.

Girls' tennis
The MHHS girls' tennis team dropped a pair of decisions to host Cranston East to begin last week's Division I play. The sides held a rare double-header for tennis to make up an earlier date that was postponed due to rain.

The Thunderbolts won both matches, 4-0 and 5-0. In the latter, the 'Bolts swept the three doubles contests and won two singles outings in pro-sets as darkness approached. The Huskies' Elena Oliveira fell to East's Helena Fisher in one of the pro-sets, 8-5, the closest of the contests completed.

The Huskies followed up with a 7-0 loss to host North Kingstown mid-week. Among the more competitive matches for the locals was at fourth singles where Kaia Brown lost 6-1 and 6-4 while the No. 3 doubles team of Ava Cabral-Charlotte Arsenault fell 6-4 and 6-2.

KMS boys' soccer
The Kickemuit Middle School boys' soccer team, mirroring their older brethren at Mt. Hope High, were also in the midst of a substantial undefeated stretch to begin the season. And the younger Huskies kept it going in their first game last week with a 2-1 win over Moses Brown.

KMS improved to 7-0-4 with the victory. Mason Reis and Dominic Oliveira each potted unassisted goals for the locals. Keeper Andrew Vieira made four saves.

The Huskies won their eighth of the season and clinched a spot in the upcoming middle school state playoffs after KMS defeated host Riverside of East Providence 4-2 Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 9.

Reis had a brace for the locals while Gabriel Neagle and Colin Kiselka added one goal apiece. Kiselka and Oliveira had one assist each. Vieira was credited with six saves. KMS upped its record to 8-0-4 with the victory.
