Mt. Hope drops 18-point decision to Division II West Warwick

The Mt. Hope High School boys' basketball team saw its six-game winning streak come an end at the start of the week, the Huskies suffering a 62-44 loss at home against West Warwick Tuesday, Jan. 21.

The visiting Wizards of Division II remained in front for just about the entire contest, leading 18-13 at the end of the first quarter and 31-23 at intermission.

The Huskies made a bit of a run in the third period thanks to the hot hand of Lucas Andreozzi, who hit four 3 pointers in the period to help the locals trail 44-39 heading into the final eight minutes.

West Warwick, though, clamped down on defense, holding Mt. Hope to just five points in the fourth quarter.

Andreozzi was the lone Husky in double figures, finishing with a game-best 20 points. He finished the night with six 3s. Jack Thompson scored eight of his nine points in the first quarter.

Greg Benton led the Wizards (8-1) with 19 points, one of four visitors to reach double digits. West Warwick's 6-foot-7 sophomore center Trevone Chase impacted both of the ends of the floor, finishing with 10 points.

"Tough game. They're good," Mt. Hope head coach Jeff Grifka said of the Wizards. "They're long and physical."

The Huskies dropped to 8-3 with the setback, their first since the calendar turned to 2025. Mt. Hope's last loss came on December 28 to another D-II team, Moses Brown, 61-33, in a holiday tournament. The locals remain unbeaten to date in four Division III games.

One of those came to close the previous week, an impressive victory over previously unbeaten Ponaganset in a meeting for the top spot in D-III on January 17.

Mt. Hope defeated the guest Chieftains, 61-52, at Fitzgerald Gymnasium, sending Ponaganset to its first D-III setback of the winter.

The visitors fell to 7-1 in the league and 7-3 overall.

Ponaganset broke out to an 18-12 edge at the end of the first period. The Huskies, though, clamped down on defense in the second to trail just 24-22 at halftime. The contest was tied at the end of three, 38-all, then the locals got their noses in front in the fourth.

Matt MacDougall scored nine of his team-high 16 points in the final eight minutes. Andreozzi did his mate one better, scoring 10 of his 13 in the fourth as the locals secured the win.

Maleaq Roderick shared team-high honors with MacDougall, scoring 11 of his 16 in the first half as the locals kept pace with the Chieftains. Jack Thompson was the fourth Husky in double digits with 10. Ethan Santerre contributed four and Brennan Perry had a bucket.
