March roars in like a lion as a fierce nor'easter pummels Rhode Island

Thousands of East Bay residents are without power Saturday morning, as National Grid crews struggle to restore service on the heels of a fierce nor’easter that saw wind gusts here as high as 60 miles per hour.

Though exact outage numbers were not available from National Grid, it appears that Barrington took the brunt of the storm, with most or all of the town without power as of 10:30 a.m. High winds are expected to continue through Saturday night, making further outages possible.

In Warren, power is on downtown and along Water Street, but out in multiple neighborhoods throughout the rest of the town. Three utility poles along the East Bay Bike Path on the Barrington line are down and in Laurel Park, workers have closed Laurel Lane to traffic while they remove a pole that fell just east of its intersection with Metacom Avenue.

In Bristol, the whole of the Narrows, Annawamscutt and Hopeworth neighborhoods are without power. A large tree fell on lower Narrows, bringing down high tension lines from Coggeshall Avenue to Paine Street. Gooding Avenue is closed to traffic, and a fleet of electric bucket trucks was spotted mobilizing in the Belltower Plaza at Metacom and Narrows. Most of downtown Bristol and parts of Metacom Avenue have power, and Dunkin Donuts downtown and Cumberland Farms on Metacom were doing a booming business Saturday morning.

Emergency crews were working non-stop Saturday morning to help residents pump water from their basements. Some homes had as much as three to four feet of water in their basements, according to fire department volunteers talking over the radio in Bristol and Warren.

When power will be restored is anyone’s guess. National Grid is reporting on its website that 114,323 customers across the state are without power, though getting precise local numbers from the Grid’s power outage map is difficult.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
