It may be starting to feel like fall in Bristol, but Sara Slusarski and Alex Brassard of 2W Productions will have residents dreaming of “Summer Nights” as they bring the groovy musical “Grease: 1979” to town this October.

Following their two-woman performance of “Wicked” this past summer, the recent college graduates immediately began to plan for their next show, set to debut on Friday, Oct. 30. While both girls have already starred in “Grease” before (as members of the Pink Ladies back in 2015 for a production at Mt. Hope High School), this time around, Sara and Alex decided they would add their own twist to the popular musical: planting Danny, Sandy and the rest of Rydell High in the 1970s instead.

“The plot’s ridiculous, everything’s ridiculous …” laughed Alex. “Well, what’s another era that, like, is kind of iconic as the ’50s are, but with very clear markers and can be just as cheesy? The ’70s really works for that.”

Plus, added Sara, the girls “love, love, love” disco music; she has been hard at work reworking the musical’s soundtrack, sampling iconic ’70s tunes with the ’50s-era songs. Alex, meanwhile, has been handling the costumes, while a friend is helping them out with video and production. And yes, there will be a giant disco ball involved, made entirely “from scratch,” said Alex.

Despite the 1970s spin, viewers can still expect to see some familiar faces from the musical, all played by either Alex or Sara; there will be Danny and Sandy, Rizzo and the Pink Ladies, the T-Birds and so on. And after weeks of rehearsing for and performing “Wicked,” Alex said she and Sara are only that much more comfortable acting in scenes together.   

“That has really helped us with Grease,” Alex said.

Just as they had before, the girls are making sure that the event is safe for everyone attending; masks and social distancing will be required, and hand sanitizer will be made readily available. To accommodate the cooler fall temperature, Sara and Alex also plan to have heaters and a fire going; weather permitting, they may add more dates for the show.

“Grease: 1979” will run Friday to Sunday, Oct. 30 to Nov. 1. All performances start at 6 p.m. and are free to the public. To reserve a spot, contact Sara and Alex at 401-424-1850.
