Thomas J. Mercier Sr., age 81, passed through Heaven’s Gate on Friday, Jan. 8, to collect his reward for a life well lived.

Devoted husband, father and grandfather, Tom was married to Jeanette (Perry) Mercier for over 60 years.

He was born and raised in Warren, Rhode Island, son of the late Blanchard and Marie (Pelletier) Mercier.

Among his numerous endeavors, Tom got his start in television repair at Gil’s Appliance and moved on to co-own A&T Electronics in Portsmouth. He was also employed by the Bristol School Department and Roger Williams University, from where he retired.

He was a member of the Hopeworth Neighborhood Association, where he worked tirelessly on numerous barbecues, clamboils, and fundraisers that benefitted his neighborhood. Tom’s love of family, cooking and hospitality made an indelible imprint on the Hopeworth community. This was evident as he and his Hopeworth neighbors hosted annual events that anyone who attended would tell you bordered on legendary.

As a member of the Hopeworth Bocce League, he was a fixture and favorite amongst his competitors, helping his team to win the championship in 2016.  Tom was known as “The Family Handyman.” He was an avid New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox fan, enjoying games with his children and grandchildren.

Tom is survived by his son, Thomas J. Mercier Jr. and his wife Amy of California; his daughters, Laurie Paul and her husband David, and Nicole Downing and her husband Billy of Bristol; his six grandchildren, Drew Mercier and his fiancé Jessica of Foxborough, Mass.; Jacob Mercier and his wife Julia of Foxborough, Mass.; David Paul Jr. of Warren; Jennae Watson and her husband Robert of Bristol; and Katherine and Andrew Downing of Bristol; and his three great-grandchildren, Luke, Mason and Lila Mercier.

Affectionately known as “Pepere,” Tom will forever occupy a special place in the hearts and minds of his family and friends.

Tom joins his sister, Jackie Maynard, and brother, Gerard Mercier, and leaves behind his sisters, Mary Ann Andrade of Florida, Theresa Sousa and Louise Dupont of Bristol, and his brother, Roger Mercier, also of Bristol.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bristol Rescue Wagon Fund, 4 Annawanscutt Drive, Bristol, RI, 02809, or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
