The 5-0 Huskies are peaking and looking for a deep playoff run

Sophomore point guard Abby Razzino scored 17 points as the Mt. Hope high school girls basketball team squashed Mt. Pleasant, 62-46, in a Division III home game on Thursday night. The Huskies are 5-0 in the division and 6-2 overall. The team has two big games left, that will determine whether the Huskies will be the one seed or two seed. On Saturday the Huskies travel to 6-0, Woonsocket and on Wednesday the team plays 4-3, Lincoln School at the high school.

The young Huskies, with a single senior on the team, have developed into a resilient press, steal and score team under second year coaches Katie Kline and Caitlin Booth. They both teach math at the high school, but come from different backgrounds. Coach Kline played high school basketball at Brookfield, CT and played Lacross at Salve Regina. Booth played hoops at Rogers, went to URI and has been an avid student and fan of the game. Both coaches are super competitive and it translates through their team on the court.

“They are really aggressive and play really well together,” said coach Booth of the Huskies. “They are a high energy group that have been playing together since middle school.”

None are tougher nor more aggressive than Razzino, who consistently took the fight to Mt. Pleasant’s guards. The Huskies point guard scored 12 points in the first quarter. She consistently stole the ball off the press and scored layups off fast breaks. When she didn’t score she got to the free-throw line.

“Abby had a phenomenal game,” said coach Kline. “She is super aggressive on defense. She sees the floor well and knows when to take her shot and set up her teammates.”

Senior forward Isabel Savinon scored two three pointers in the fourth quarter to keep Mt. Pleasant at bay. She is the team’s captain and is a big help on and off the court.

“Isabel pushed through an injury and hit two big threes late in the game,” said coach Kline. “She’s a great leader. She’s has a lot of energy, a positive attitude and has earned the respect of her teammates.”

The team is loaded at the guard position with freshman Elsa White and juniors Aditi Mehta, Amani Jackson and Laura Johnson. White scored 10 points, many on mid-range jump shots. The petite guard is also quick and nasty on defense.

“Elsa has been a nice addition to the team,” said coach Booth. She releases well on the fast break and is excellent at finding her spot.”

For the Huskies, it starts with strong rebounding  from forwards Reyn Ferris and Aeryal Rodrigues. Ferris, an athletic sophomore, scored 8 points against the Kilties and averages 10 boards a game, according to coach Kline. “She’s been a huge component. She pulls down rebounds and is excellent at pushing the ball up the court and finding her open teammates. Reyn’s still growing into her body. She’s going to be an exciting future player.” Rodrigues, a junior, is a physical player that crashes into scrums to grab a rebound. She has no fear of putting her self in harms way if it means coming away with the ball.

Playoffs

If the Huskies win their next two games they’ll clinch the first seed. That will bode well for a deep playoff run.

“The team is peaking and playing really strong,” said coach Kline. “We are hopeful.”

Huskies Scoring: Abigail Razzino led the Huskies with 17 points, Elsa White scored 10, Amani Jackson scored 8, Reyn Ferris scored 8, Isabel Savinon scored 6, Laura Johnson scored 6, Areyal Rodriguez scored 3, Aditi Mehta scored 2, and Lauren Pais scored 2.
