BRISTOL — Courtney Monterecy was formally introduced as the new assistant superintendent for the Bristol Warren Regional School District at the June 9 meeting of the school committee, when that same evening the body approved the new aide's contract after it was presented by Superintendent Ana Riley.
"First of all, thank you so much for welcoming me to this community. I'm really looking forward to getting started, making great things happen," Monterecy said in brief remarks after her contract was approved last Monday night.
She continued, "This is my 25th year as an educator, and I've been in Providence Public Schools the entire time, as a teacher, as a reading coach and ESL (English as a Second Language) specialist and assistant principal, now a principal. So I'm very excited. I feel like my whole life, I knew I wanted to be a teacher and I wanted to work in education, and this is just a blessing and an honor to have been chosen to join your team. So thank you so much."
Monterecy takes over for Dr. Diane Sanna, who is stepping away from the position after 11 years in that role. Sanna's retirement is effective June 30.
Of Sanna, Riley said, "Diane has been a tremendous resource to me during my tenure as superintendent. From my first days here, she has been generous in sharing her institutional knowledge of the district. One thing that stands out to me is her commitment to helping children find success. Her dedication to teaching and learning is commendable. I wish her the best in her future endeavors. She will be missed."
Monterecy's duties, according to a release issued by the administration, including serving "as the instructional leader for the district, providing leadership, direction and supervision for building level administrators. She will be responsible for increasing the effectiveness of the operation, planning, development and administration of all school-based programs supporting the district’s mission to ensure that all students are college and career-ready."
In addition, Monterecy will be "working to help align district resources with school needs, implement an instructional plan for the district that ensures effective teaching in every classroom, and create conditions that ensure systemic improvement of practice over time in every classroom. The position requires strong knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and best practices for assessment."
Her resumé includes a master’s degree in K-12 administration from Providence College, a degree in English as a Second Language from Rhode Island College and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla.
Monterecy comes to the district after as principal of Fogarty Elementary School in Providence since 2014. In addition, she has spent aforementioned time in the classroom as an ESL instructor and reading coach. Her administrative credentials also include being an assistant principal in the Providence system.
