Join our April 5 protest of federal government actions

To the editor:

I am writing this letter on behalf of a recently organized group, Islanders for Democracy. We are area citizens who are alarmed at the actions being taken at the federal level. Among our concerns are the treatment of veterans, women, minority populations, the elderly — just about everyone in the United States who are not wealthy and well connected, and, who are being impacted negatively by actions taken by the current administration in D.C.

As is the tradition in our country, we are exercising our right of peaceful assembly by joining the nationwide April 5 demonstrations sponsored by the national and state group Indivisible. Our local rally will be held in Portsmouth on April 5 between noon and 2 p.m. in front of Bank Newport on the adjacent sidewalks of the bank’s property.

We welcome all area residents who wish to participate in standing up both for our democracy and for the residents of this country. We will hold this rally rain or shine. Come as you are with a sign or without a sign.

Respectfully,

Carol Anderheggen

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
