The Mt. Hope High School girls' basketball team used a dominant opening eight minutes to take firm control of its 2025 Division II preliminary round playoff game against visiting Johnston Tuesday night, Feb. 18, en route to a relatively comfortable 51-38 victory.

The seventh-seeded Huskies never trailed after holding the 10th-seeded Panthers to just one field goal and a free throw in the first quarter as the hosts built a sizeable 18-3 advantage.

The sides played even to the intermission, Mt. Hope maintaining the same 15-point lead (28-13) at the break.

Johnston, which dropped a 41-36 home decision to the Huskies during the regular season, remained more competitive over the final 16 minutes, but was only able to trim just two points off its early deficit before the final horn.

Senior center Emily Moran led the first-quarter Mt. Hope onslaught, scoring 11 of her game-best 21 points during period.

Lilly DaSilveira helped the Huskies maintain their margin in the second half, scoring 12 of her 16 in the third and fourth quarters.

Hailey Ferreira chipped in six points for the locals. Adriana Botelho had four, Maddy Butterworth three and Catherine Frawley a free throw.

For Johnston, its season ended with an 8-16 overall record and 6-14 in D-II games.

For Mt. Hope, the victory sends the Huskies to Tiverton Friday afternoon, Feb. 21, to face the second-seeded Tigers in the D-II tournament quarterfinals. Tip time is 5 o'clock.

The contest marks a quick turn-around rematch for the sides, which also met on the final night of the regular season Friday night, Feb. 14, in Tiverton where the Tigers rallied in the second half to defeat the Huskies, 51-44.

Mt. Hope improved to 12-10 overall with the win over Johnston, 10-7 in league games. Tiverton enters the quarters with a 16-6 overall mark and 15-2 in D-II outings. The Tigers finished second in the new power ranking playoff system to top-seeded Narragansett (18-2, 16-2).

The winner of the Tiverton-Mt. Hope quarter meets its counterpart to emerge from the No. 3-6 matchup between East Providence and Smithfield in the semifinals, the date, site and time of which remains to be determined.
